Insider business fraud 'on the rise'

Incidents of insider business fraud are on the increase, it has been revealed.
According to the CIFAS Staff Fraud Database, dishonest actions by staff to obtain benefits and theft by deception rose by 69 per cent in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2008.
In addition, there was a rise noted in the number of female employees involved in fraud, with the figure for women filed for this reason doubling during this time.
Commenting on the trend, CIFAS staff fraud advisor Arjun Medhi said that while fraud is traditionally seen as a male activity, the cases filed this year prove that current conditions have eroded this difference.
He added: "As wallets and purses get squeezed, it is surprising to see how many more women feel compelled to attempt fraud against their employer."
A non-for-profit organisation, CIFAS is a membership association which is dedicated to the prevention of financial crime and staff fraud.
