Men accused of north-west insurance fraud scam

A number of men were involved in a complex insurance fraud scam in the north-west of England between 2005 and 2008, a court in Manchester was told.
Mohammad Patel and others are thought to have earned around £46,000 by staging more than 90 car accidents in the area as part of an organised "crash-for-cash" scheme.
A jury at Manchester crown court heard that Mr Patel was driving an Audi A6 in 2005 when he braked suddenly, causing the Volvo behind him to crash into his vehicle.
He then gave the Volvo driver the details of another man, Rashid Shaikh, instead of his own, despite Mr Shaikh not being present when the incident occurred.
Mr Shaikh and two other men then submitted fraudulent insurance claims for injuries related to the crash.
"The offences came to light after staff working in an office noticed there were a lot of collisions outside," explained William Baker, prosecuting, the Manchester Evening News reported.
He added: "They began to pay attention to the collisions and saw it was the same man driving these cars, Mohammed Patel."
Another insurance fraud story made international headlines this week as two British law graduates were sentenced to community service in Brazil for attempting to make a fraudulent claim on their travel insurance to help pay for their round-the-world holiday.
