Soldier recieves compensation for permanent hearing damage

A solider who planned to spend his career with the Army has been awarded compensation after his hearing was permanently damaged during basic training in Scotland.

Private Charls Bradlaugh of Sunderland was told to remove his ear defenders during a training exercise before and has been left partially deaf as a result.

While the Army initially offered Mr Bradlaugh £2,000 in compensation and admitted liability immediately, he instead decided to sue.

Mr Bradlaugh, of Sunderland, claimed the hearing loss has ended his dream of becoming a military helicopter pilot and is now disadvantaged on the open labour market.

A Newcastle county court judge offered him £328,941 last week, including damages for future loss of earnings and future loss of pensions, as well as having to give up on his dream career.

Under the current Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, someone who has sustained hearing damage is entitled to a maximum of £5,775, but the hearing loss must have been experienced in both ears to be eligible.

A marine who was awarded compensation from the MoD following the loss of two limbs in Afghanistan is currently seeking a greater sum from the organisation, which he claims did not take the full extent of his injuries into account when he originally made the claim.
