Ex-headteacher in compensation fight after cliff fall

An ex-headteacher of an outdoor pursuits centre in north Wales who was forced into early retirement after suffering injuries in a cliff fall is fighting for compensation from Birmingham city council.

The Birmingham Mail reported David Howard-Jones had to take early retirement in 2005 with six months' half-pay after he stepped into a hole near the edge of a cliff and plunged into the sea in Snowdonia National Park the previous year.

Mr Howard-Jones, who was an experienced mountain guide and headteacher of the council-owned Ogwen Cottage Outdoor Pursuits Centre for 31 years before the incident, had to be rescued by a colleague.

He suffered orthopaedic problems, hearing damage and loss of peripheral vision following the fall, but was denied compensation from the council's voluntary personal accident scheme when he was accused of negligence for standing too close to the edge of the precipice.

"From the onset I said it was an accident and I wasn't seeking any compensation other than for my injuries under the council's employees scheme," said Mr Howard-Jones, who won an appeal for compensation after he took the case to arbitration.

He added that he would like the council to cover some £12,500 in legal costs, but has not yet received an offer from the group.

Ogwen Cottage has been owned by Birmingham city council since 1964 and is part of the group's Outdoor Learning Service.ADNFCR-1678-ID-19319000-ADNFCR
