Legal action 'considered' over asbestos-related death

A widow whose husband died of an asbestos-related disease is considering legal action against defunct high street retailer Woolworths.
Verna Sarjeant told Get Surrey that her late husband Les first worked for a Woolworths store in Hastings at the age of 16, as well as for several other branches of the store "for most of his life".
Ms Sarjeant said Les - who was diagnosed with mesothelioma shortly before his death at the age of 74 last year - frequently came into contact with asbestos in ironing board covers and other merchandise items in the store stockrooms.
"As a teenager, Les was unaware of the risk at the time - although he made the connection, which has been confirmed by a former colleague, when he became ill," she stated.
Ms Sarjeant added her husband suffered from shortness of breath for more than a year before he died and she hopes that Woolworths' insurers will accept responsibility for the condition that led to his death.
Last month, the Health and Safety Executive stressed that property owners must keep accurate records of asbestos in their buildings and ensure these details are passed on to contractors.
